What happened in this accident?
The news was filled with the possibility of crowded roadways over the Thanksgiving holiday, but nobody could have predicted the pileup that happened on I-90 on November 26.
In the span of 25 minutes, about a half an inch of snow fell and caused very slick driving conditions in parts of Spokane that day. This was a recipe for disaster on an already busy travel day. The conditions set off a chain reaction of crashes that ended up involving around 60 cars.
At least six people were injured in the accident according to the Washington Department of Transportation. Thankfully, the six people wounded did not sustain life-threatening injuries. The incident left all lanes of I-90 blocked in both directions for several hours.
At one point during the massive cleanup operation, workers ran out of tow trucks to help clear the disabled vehicles from the roadway. A bus from Spokane was used to take stranded motorists to a warming center nearby.
Car accidents are often unpredictable
This incident was caused by the rapid snowfall and slick roadways. As the temperatures cool, drivers need to be careful, especially when snowy or icy conditions are expected. If you find yourself in a situation where the weather is turning for the worse, slow down and increase your distance between your car and the vehicles in front of you.
