Caregivers are often become a part of life when it comes to elderly dependent family members. People with dependent relatives are most often not able to stop their lives in order to dedicate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to care for their dependents. Caregivers give these people the freedom to leave their dependents in capable, caring hands while they go about their other daily commitments. Unfortunately, people sometimes find out that the caregivers they have trusted to take care of their relatives have abused that trust and harmed their relatives.

If your dependent family member has suffered abuse at the hands of his or her caregiver, contact our Federal Way nursing home abuse attorneys to schedule a consultation. Elderly dependents need care and protection and when they suffer injuries and damages due to nursing home abuse, the caregiver deserves to be held accountable and dependents deserve to be compensated.

Elder abuse

When an elderly loved one has reached the point that it is unsafe for him or her to be alone, it is usually up to children and other relatives to make the decisions regarding around the clock care for their loved one. In the past, relatives often had to make the difficult decision to move their loved ones into a nursing home, but adult daycares have given relatives another elder care option. Adult daycares are similar to child daycares as they provide care for elderly during the day allowing relatives the freedom to work and go about their other daily activities. In some cases however, full time nursing home care is the only feasible option for elderly dependents and their relatives.

Whether or not elderly dependents are being cared for in adult daycares or in nursing homes, they are unfortunately vulnerable to caregiver predators. See below for some common elder care abuse scenarios.

  • Financial abuse – Caregivers often have access to their patients’ personal information including checkbooks and bank accounts. They may steal patients’ money by gaining access to their finances or they may coerce patients into giving them money.
  • Sexual, physical, or verbal abuse – Adult dependents may also become victims of sexual, physical, or verbal abuse at their care facilities. This type of abuse often goes unreported because patients are either afraid to report it or do not have the mental capacity to understand what is happening.
  • Neglect and isolation – Neglect and isolation can occur in different ways such as leaving an immobile adult alone for hours at a time, failing to answer their calls for assistance, or allowing them to sit in soiled clothing or otherwise unsanitary conditions.
  • Inadequate medical treatment – The elderly require a lot of medical care and they suffer when they are deprived of necessary medical care or when the care they receive is not appropriate or adequate.
