Brooke Taylor was a well-known commercial litigator, someone who brought in a significant amount of income doing her job. That was until she suffered from a serious brain injury when she was 38 years old.

On the afternoon of April 24, 2016, Taylor was driving on Seneca Street through a green light when she was struck by a Seattle Fire Department ambulance. The accident caused her vehicle to spin counter-clockwise and collide with a traffic signal box as well as a tree. The driver of the ambulance had the lights and siren on at the time but did not slow down as necessary at the intersection, something required by state law.

The brain injury Taylor suffered as a result of the accident was serious. Her physicians said they thought there was a chance she would not survive. She did, but she is still facing a long road on her way to recovery. It is unlikely that she will ever return to her job as a litigator. She was awarded $65.7 million in a settlement with the city.

At Russell & Hill – Injury & Accident Attorneys, we understand the seriousness of brain injuries and want to help you if someone else has caused you harm. If you need a Seattle brain injury attorney, call us today.

How Traumatic Brain Injuries Affect Victims

In the case above, people may be wondering why the settlement was so large. In fact, it is the largest settlement the city has ever had to pay out. As we mentioned above, Taylor was a very successful attorney, and her lifetime future earnings would have been tremendous.

Her brain injury stole that away from her.

Brain injuries range in severity, so we want to discuss them for a moment. The most minor form of a brain injury is known as a concussion. Millions of people in the US suffer from concussions annually, and most of the victims are children and teens who play sports. These are treatable, but can become major injuries if a person suffers another blow to the head.

Severe brain injuries can completely alter a person’s life. They can change their cognitive abilities as well as their physical abilities. We know that there are more than 5.3 million people living with disabilities caused by TBIs. The main causes of traumatic brain injuries in the US are:

  • Falls at home or in the workplace
  • Physical violence (CDV, gunshots, etc.)
  • Vehicle accidents
  • Objects falling into a person’s head
