Spokane County Crash, Washington – A collision involving two vehicles meeting head-on in the area of SR 290 near the Trent Ave and Harvard Road intersection left two car drivers dead, the Washington State Patrol reported Saturday morning.

What Happened in the Spokane County Crash?

As reported, the accident happened around 3 a.m. When a Volkswagen sedan, traveling westbound, turned to the opposite side of the road and bumped head-on into the Dodge car. The driver of the Volkswagen sedan has been identified as a 20-year-old man from Clayton, Wash. The other is 61-year-old Thomas L. Nafe Jr. from Athol, Idaho. The two vehicles finished up on their respective shoulders, and both men were pronounced dead at the crash site.

WSP indicated that speeding was among the factors contributing to the accident. The troopers reported that the young man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Ultimately, this is an event that is still being investigated by the relevant authorities.

Why Head-on Collisions Are So Dangerous?

A frontal head-on collision can cause the worst possible accident because of the impact involved in a direct face-off between the cars involved in the accident. Moreover, in the case of a two-lane road, a minor swerving action from the lane can lead to a complete catastrophe in a matter of seconds.

All these examples share the following commonalities:

  • Speeding decreases the time taken to react and increases the stopping distance
  • Fatigue or impairment, especially during late-night or early-morning hours
  • Distraction or inattention
  • Passing or drifting over the center line
  • Not wearing the seat belt

A Reminder About Seat Belts and Speed

Unfortunately, the fact that the Volkswagen driver was not wearing his seatbelt, as indicated in the report, is a cause for some level of concern. This is because seat belts are not the tools that can prevent road accidents, but the safety belts that determine whether a person lives or dies during the occurrence of the accident, depending on the severity of the accident.

Nevertheless, issues regarding speeding should not be overlooked in a brief paragraph either. If the speeding rate is only slightly beyond the limit, there will be an increase in crash severity and a decrease in reaction time if the driver swerves off the highway. In the case of SR 290, when oncoming traffic is heavy, it is crucial to stay in your lane and maintain the right speed.

When a Fatal Crash May Involve Legal Claims?

A serious car accident leaves the family with many questions, particularly if the accident was caused by negligence, such as:

  • Speeding
  • Reckless lane changes
  • Impairment
  • Or other unsafe behavior

Sometimes, the dependents might have the chance to sue for wrongful death or other claims that are available under Washington state car accident laws. Such claims can cover damages like medical expenses and the cost of the funeral.

Additionally, it is not uncommon to see the insurance firm move quickly in the aftermath of a serious auto accident. They could demand an audio recording declaration or participate in a quick settlement before it is known. So, early consultation may help families avoid mistakes in the process.

What to Do After a Serious Crash?

If this is indeed the case, and you are involved in an accident, take great caution for your safety first, then document the scene:

  • Call 911 or seek immediate medical attention.
  • If possible, photograph and gather witness information.
  • Keep copies of medical records, statements, and work absence documents.
  • Be cautious about responding to requests from insurers until you understand your rights.
