What is the Law for Electric Scooters in Everett and Spokane, Washington?

Electric scooters have arrived In Everett, Washington. The company is called LIME, and they have provided one hundred scooters to Everett starting on May 2019. Everett City code makes it clear electric scooters cannot be ridden on the sidewalks. Yet every day e-scooters are zooming along city sidewalks because most people have not made sure they know the law before renting a LIME electric scooter.

E-scooter drivers in the City of Everett must also wear a helmet and they can only be ridden from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunrise. They are not allowed to exceed 15 miles per hour, cannot be ridden on any city street that has a posted speed of over 25 mph, and all riders must be age 16 or older.

The laws are different in Spokane, Washington, where there are 500 new Lime electric scooters available for use as of May 2019. The law in the City of Spokane states scooter drivers must ride in the street or in the bike lanes in the downtown core to avoid conflict with pedestrians on the sidewalks. See the map below.

Outside of this geofence, on streets with speed limits over 30 mph, scooters are allowed to be ridden on the sidewalk. Pedestrians beware!
